Observation and focus are both important for the learning, appreciation and creation of music. Observation involves keenly watching the rhythmic, srtuctural and feel , while focus helps in concentrating on these elements such that it becomes easy to learn and perform .
Since Carnatic music still follows an oral tradition, students must observe the Guru for intricate phrases, techniques and fingering methods as it varies from person to person. Observation and focus on the multiple aspects of music boosts concentration and memory and often gets translated to academic excellence.
Focused observation and learning helps in being able to predict the next steps of progression easily, which makes learning enjoyable. Constantly observing the sound that one produces , helps in always tweaking and enhancing ones capability. High level performance requires extreme focus on precise timing and creating complex phrases . If one is playing in an orchestra the spatial arrangement needs good focus and reflex.
